Winterizing Your Pool in Charlotte, NC

Charlotte's mild winters mean "winterization" is different than northern climates.

Do Charlotte Pools Need Full Winterization?

No. Charlotte rarely freezes hard enough to damage pools. Most pools run year-round at reduced schedules.

Two Approaches

Option 1: Keep Running (Recommended)

  • Run pump 4-6 hours/day (vs 10-14 in summer)
  • Maintain minimum chlorine levels
  • Use pool cover to reduce debris
  • Install freeze guard on automation system
  • Monitor for freezing nights (rare, but possible)
Option 2: Full Winterization (Only if closing for extended period)
  • Lower water below skimmer
  • Blow out plumbing lines
  • Add antifreeze to lines
  • Remove/store equipment (not usually necessary)
  • Install winter cover

Freeze Protection

On nights forecasted below 28°F:

  • Run pump continuously
  • Keep water circulating (moving water won't freeze)
  • Modern automation systems have freeze protection mode

Monthly Winter Maintenance

  • Test/adjust chemistry monthly
  • Skim debris weekly
  • Run pump at least 4 hours/day
  • Check equipment for leaks
Charlotte's mild winters mean your pool needs attention year-round, but minimal effort keeps it protected.
