Common Pool Problems & Fixes

Charlotte pool issues and how to solve them.

Green Water

Cause: Algae growth (low chlorine, poor circulation) Fix: 1. Shock pool (triple dose chlorine) 2. Add algaecide 3. Run pump 24/7 for 48 hours 4. Brush walls vigorously 5. Vacuum debris (waste mode, not filter)

Cloudy Water

Cause: pH imbalance, inadequate filtration, early algae Fix: 1. Test and balance pH (7.4-7.6) 2. Shock pool 3. Add clarifier 4. Run filter continuously for 24 hours 5. Clean filter

Low Chlorine / Won't Hold Chlorine

Cause: High chlorine demand, stabilizer issues, algae Fix: 1. Test cyanuric acid (CYA) — should be 30-50 ppm 2. If CYA over 100, partially drain and refill 3. Shock pool, maintain 3-5 ppm chlorine for a week

Pump Won't Prime / Weak Flow

Cause: Air leak, clogged impeller, low water level Fix: 1. Check water level (must be mid-skimmer) 2. Inspect pump basket and lid O-ring 3. Check for air leaks in plumbing 4. Clean impeller

Green Stains on Walls

Cause: Algae or metal (copper) in water Fix: 1. Test for metals 2. If algae: Shock + algaecide + brushing 3. If metals: Add metal remover, adjust pH

Charlotte-Specific Issues

Pollen (Spring): Skim daily, shock weekly, run filter longer Heavy Rain: Test and rebalance chemistry immediately
